Mountaineers not to summit the Everest in early May
March 19th, 2008
Update 1 (April 21): Although climbing the Everest has not been banned, mountaineers will not be allowed to camp above 7,500 meters between May 1 to 10.
Mountaineers will not summit the Everest from May 1 to 10, 2008. This step is taken as the Chinese prepare to take the Olympic torch to the summit. The Chinese side has prohibited any expedition during that period whereas the Nepali tourism entrepreneurs have agreed not take the summiters to the top during the same period.
The Chinese government seems to be concerned about the possibility of pro Tibet protest in the Everest during that period. This might have motivated the government to pressurize the Nepalese government and tourism entrepreneurs to comply to its request.
