On the back of the record number of load shedding hours, there is another record for the Nepalese tourism. Nepal welcomed more than 800,000 travelers in 2008. This is the highest number of tourists that have visited the country in a year - a 65 percent increase from the previous year.

The highest number of arrivals is from India - around 100,000 and the highest month for arrival was October - also around 100,000. If there was no closure of the travel to Tibet during the olympics, then we could have probably reached the milestone of 1 million guests in Nepal.

There are 17 international teams and 3 domestic teams competing this year. The defending champion, Junga Bahadur will be sadly missed this year, as he died of pneumonia earlier in the year.

There will also be elephant football (played by the cubs)and oxen cart race, on which the locals will compete.

Tharu cultural program and Sauraha Food Festival are other attractions of the festival.

Yesterday, I happened to be in Thamel for a dinner with a friend. The atmosphere was lively with live performances in many bars, restaurants. The main Thamel, however, was not friendly to people loving peace environment.
