The Annapurna Circuit Trek starts from Besisahar. To reach Besisahar from Kathmandu, you have to reach Dumre by bus. From Dumre, buses and 4Wds run in regular intervals to Besisahar. There are direct micro buses from Kathmandu and buses from Narayanghat to Besisahar.

Mini and micro buses leave frequently for Sundarijal from Kathmandu’s City Bus Station (cost about a third of a dollar). You could also go to Jorpati and catch a bus for Sundarijal at the junction. If you take a taxi from Kathmandu, it will cost you around 10 dollars.

The Everest Base Camp Trek starts in Jiri or Lukla. Buses leave Kathmandu for Jiri (cost about 4 dollars) between 5.30 am to 8 am and take around 10 hours. There is an ‘express’ bus that leaves the Kathmandu Bus Station for Jiri at 6 am (cost about 4.5 dollars). Make sure you guard your luggage well on such bus trips.

To start the trek from Lukla, either fly from Kathmandu in domestic airlines to Lukla airport or walk from Jiri to Chablung, the nearest place on the trail from Lukla. The trail from Jiri to Chablung requires 7 days to complete. If you are flying in to Lukla, walk past Chablung to Phakding for the overnight accommodation.

Bus is the most common means of transportation between cities in terai. You could get ‘Day’ or ‘Night’ services, day service buses leaving between 5 am to noon and night service buses departing between 4 pm to 6 pm. These services are for longer routes. For shorter routes, there are local buses and tempos, which are quite slow.

You can get buses to Kathmandu, Pokhara and other cities in Terai at Sauraha Chowk, which lies in the Mahendra Highway about 6 kilometers north of Sauraha. You could also get a bus to Narayangarh (Rs 10, 15 cents, 20 minutes) first and then take another bus from there.

A bus ride from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Chitwan costs around Rs 350 ($5) and takes six to seven hours. Buses stop at Chitrasali, about 5 kilometer from Sauraha. You can ride on a jeep or a local bus from Chitrasali to Sauraha.

The daily air-conditioned bus operated by Greenline is a more comfortable alternative. It costs $10 both from Kathmandu and Pokhara and includes a brunch.

Day and night buses to Sunauli and Bhairawa take 9 hours (Rs. 175/200, $2.5/3). It takes 10 hours to reach Birgunj on a bus (Rs 195, $3) from Pokhara. Tourist buses are not available from Pokhara to the Indian Border.

Public buses from Pokhara cost around Rs. 135 ($2) for day service and Rs. 195 ($3) for night service. Tourist minibuses cost Rs. 250 ($4) and the price for large tourist buses starts from Rs. 180 (around $3). If you are looking for some first class service, you could go for Greenline or Travelances which provide air-conditioned buses and breakfast en route for $10.

Day buses leave Pokhara to Kathmandu and other destinations between 5 am to noon and night buses leave between 4 pm to 6 pm.

Rupa Tal and Begnas Tal are the second and third largest lakes in the valley, 15 kilometer east of the Pokhara city. There are regular bus services from Pokhara to Begnas Bazaar. There are a number of basic trekking lodges in this area as it is a part of major trekking routes.
